Fish battles back to set up Djokovic clash

Mardy Fish came back from losing the opening set to advance to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells where he will meet second seed Novak Djokovic.

Fish struggled early on but recovered to inflict a 1-6 6-1 6-3 defeat on Michael Berrer of Germany.

He will now face the man who beat him in the 2008 final of this tournament.

Wild card Carlos Moya was also among those who advanced, but he made hard work of beating American qualifier Tim Smyczek 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-5).

Mario Ancic of Croatia battled his way back to beat American Bobby Reynolds 4-6 6-3 6-4.

There were also wins for Pablo Cuevas, Florent Serra, Ramon Delgado, Kevin Anderson, Jeremy Chardy, Rainer Schuettler, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Fabio Fognini, Daniel Koellerer, Brian Dabul, Ryan Harrison, Philipp Petzschner and Ernests Gulbis.

Meanwhile, American teenager Sloane Stephens won her first match at WTA Tour level at the tender age of 16 as she beat Lucie Hradecka in straight sets.

Stephens had to fight for it but eventually beat the Czech 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (9-7) to go through.

However, fellow Americans Shenay Perry and Melanie Oudin made quick exits. Perry lost 6-2 4-6 6-3 to Karolina Sprem, while Oudin went down 3-6 6-3 6-0 to Italian Roberta Vinci.

Carla Suarez Navarro, Yung-Jan Chan, Tsvetana Pironkova, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Petra Kvitova, Sara Errani, Petra Martic, Sybille Bammer, Alexandra Dulghera, Julia Goerges, Anastasija Sevastova and Julie Coin all progressed to the next round.
