World number six Elena Dementieva returned from an eight-week injury lay-off with victory over Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm in Stanford, USA.The Russian, playing for the first time since retiring from her French Open semi-final against Francesca Schiavone on 3 June, won 3-6 6-3 6-4. Top seed Samantha Stosur, at a career-high five in the world, beat American qualifier Christina McHale 6-1 7-5. Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska and seventh seed Yanina Wickmayer also won. Stosur will face Wickmayer in the quarter-finals on Friday, while Dementieva will play the winner of Thursday's match between Maria Sharapova and Olga Govortsova. Who will win the title in Stanford? Dementieva missed Wimbledon with a left calf injury - her first Grand Slam absence in more than 10 years - and was below her best against the 39-year-old Date Krumm. "It's never easy to play without competition for two weeks and it took me a while to get into the game," said Dementieva. "Sometimes it's good to go three sets and to face those difficult moments while finding a way to win."
