Milos Raonic to sit out Canada's Davis Cup clash with Great Britain

Milos Raonic has pulled out of the Canada team to face Great Britain in next week's Davis Cup first-round clash in Ottawa.

The world number three sustained a thigh injury in his Australian Open quarter-final loss to Rafael Nadal on Wednesday and will be replaced by Peter Polansky.

Raonic said: "I am sad and disappointed that I am unable to compete alongside the Canadian Davis Cup team versus Great Britain.

"I sustained an injury during my previous match in Australia that will keep me off the court for the coming weeks. I wish all the best to my team-mates and my full support is behind them in this exciting tie."

Raonic's absence means Canada do not have a top-100 singles player, with world number 132 Polansky joining 135th-ranked Vasek Pospisil and Wimbledon junior champion Denis Shapovalov in the team, which also includes veteran doubles player Daniel Nestor.

Britain will now be firm favourites to win the tie despite the expected absence of Andy Murray, with top-50 pair Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund at Leon Smith's disposal.

Smith left the door open should Murray change his mind about missing the tie, but Raonic's withdrawal will surely have convinced the Scot his side can cope without him.

The tie begins at the Arena at TD Place on February 3, with the winners going through to a quarter-final against either France or Japan in April.
