Spain retains top spotThe latest ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking has been released following the weekend’s World Group quarterfinals and Zone Group ties.Spain retained top spot despite suffering a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of France in Clermont-Ferrand. Gael Monfils and Michael Llodra caused singles upsets on the opening day to put the home side in control, before Llodra teamed up with Julien Benneteau to clinch the vital doubles rubber.This landmark victory for France, which was its first over Spain for 87 years, provided a jump of four places to No. 7. Guy Forget’s team will have the chance to progress further when it faces Argentina at home in September’s World Group semifinals.Argentina’s fifth rubber win over Russia helped it rise to No. 3 in the rankings, while the other two semifinalists, Serbia and Czech Republic, jumped to No. 6 and No. 2 respectively.The ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking was launched at the end of 2001 and is the sole criteria for seeding at all levels of the competition. A new rankings list is published after each tie weekend, taking into account results from the previous four years.Check out the full rankings
