Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was made to battle all the way before advancing to the third round of the Open 13 in Marseille on Wednesday.

Tsonga managed just one break of serve in the entire match against fellow Frenchman Josselin Ouanna, a lucky loser from qualifying, eventually prevailing 7-6 (11/9) 6-4.

Earlier in the day, Tommy Robredo and Marcos Baghdatis were both eliminated in the second round.

Fourth seed Robredo fell to Germany's Mischa Zverev, who ended a six-match losing streak with his first-round victory on Monday and followed that up by beating his Spanish opponent 6-2 3-6 6-1 to reach the last eight.

Baghdatis, seeded seventh, lost 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 to home hope Michael Llodra, who is again showing good form in Marseille after reaching the final last year.

In an all-French clash, eighth seed Julien Benneteau beat Florent Serra 6-4 6-4 while, in the first round, Belgian qualifier Yannick Mertens defeated Jan Hajek 7-6 (10/8) 6-1.
