Gael Monfils was dumped out of the Italian Open at the first round after a straight sets defeat to Thomaz Bellucci in Rome.
The 14th seed was fighting a losing battle throughout, conceding 15 break points to his Brazilian opponent but saving 12 of them in a losing cause as he went down 6-3 7-6 (7/2).
Tenth seed Milos Raonic was taken to three sets by home wildcard Marco Cecchinato 6-4 4-6 6-4, as was 13th seed Dominic Thiem - a 6-3 3-6 6-4 winner over Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Richard Gasquet, seeded 11th, had a simpler outing and breezed through his match with fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-0.
Nick Kyrgios dealt even more summarily with Salvatore Caruso, needing just an hour to reel off a 6-1 6-2 win.
At the other end of the spectrum Joao Sousa took four minutes shy of three hours to squeeze past Lorenzo Sonego 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 7-5.
Alexander Zverev, Andreas Seppi, Ernests Gulbis, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Jack Sock and Mikhail Kukushkin also moved into the second round on Monday.
