Stan Wawrinka battles from behind to advance in Basle

Top seed Stan Wawrinka was forced to come from a set down against Swiss wildcard Marco Chiudinelli to book his place in the second round of the ATP Swiss Indoors Basle.

The Swiss world number three lost the opening set on a tie-break against his 35-year-old countryman before coming back to win 6-7 (1/7) 6-1 6-4 to secure a place against American qualifier Donald Young.

Number two seed Milos Raonic, however, is out after the Canadian was beaten by a fightback from Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis, the world number 91 who recorded a shock 3-6 6-3 6-3 win.

Grigor Dimitrov, the sixth seed from Bulgaria, was also on the end of an unexpected defeat, going down 6-7 (9/11) 6-4 6-4 against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.

Elsewhere, Florian Mayer of Germany beat France's Benoit Paire 6-1 6-7 (2/7) 6-4, Spaniard Marcel Granollers defeated home hope Henri Laaksonen 6-3 3-6 6-2 and Italian Paolo Lorenzi knocked out Nicolas Mahut of France 6-4 7-6 (7/4).

David Goffin won the final match of the day as he beat Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets, triumphing 6-4 7-6 (7/5).

At the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, third seed Dominic Thiem beat fellow Austrain Gerald Melzer 6-0 6-3 to move into the second round.

Jurgen Melzer delighted the home support as he put out fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, beating the Spaniard 6-3 7-5.

Number five seed David Ferrer is through after British number two Kyle Edmund was forced to retire with injury when trailing 3-2 inh the first set against the Spaniard.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, seeded six, beat German Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-4.

Seventh seed Lucas Pouille is out after the Frenchman lost 6-4 2-6 7-5 against Feliciano Lopez of Spain.

Serbian Viktor Troicki beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-5, while Portuguese player Joao Sousa progressed with victory over Pablo Cuevas after the Urguyan pulled out of the match when trailing 6-3 3-0.

Gilles Simon of France beat Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 7-5 to set up a potential second-round contest against top seed Andy Murray, the world number two, who plays Slovakian Martin Klizan on Wednesday.
