American Sam Querrey produced a strong serving performance to book his place in the second round of the Open de Nice on Monday.
Querrey, who reached the final of the US Clay Court Championships in Houston last month, lost just seven service points on his way to a 6-2 6-3 win over Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans.
Promising 21-year-old Austrian Dominic Thiem also advanced with a 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 win over Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.
Croatia's Borna Coric beat Australian qualifier Sam Groth 7-5 6-3, while American Steve Johnson saw off Michael Venus of New Zealand 7-5 6-3.
