Qualifier Facundo Bagnis to face defending champion Pablo Cuevas in Brasil Open

Qualifier Facundo Bagnis defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu to set up a second round meeting with defending champion Pablo Cuevas at the Brasil Open.

Third seed Cuevas awaits Bagnis after the Argentinian saw off 34-year-old Frenchman Mathieu 6-4 6-1 at Sao Paulo.

Top seed Benoit Paire will open his campaign against Dusan Lajovic, who beat the tournament's 2015 runner-up Luca Vanni 6-2 6-2.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Paolo Lorenzi crashed out 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 7-6 (7/5) to Slovenian qualifier Blaz Rola, who will next face Inigo Cervantes - a 6-3 6-4 winner of the match against fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers.

Qualifier Gastao Elias and Diego Schwartzman both advanced to the second round after their opponents retired.

Elias progressed 1-6 6-4 0-0 when eighth seed Pablo Andujar retired with a shoulder injury, while Horacio Zeballos trailed 6-3 4-2 before dehydration ended his challenge against Schwartzman.

Elsewhere, wildcard Thiago Monteiro beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3 7-5, Pablo Carreno Busta knocked out fifth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas 0-6 6-4 7-6 (7/2) and Santiago Giraldo was a 6-2 6-2 conqueror of Marco Cecchinato.
