Philipp Kohlschreiber's bid to become the first home-grown winner of the German Tennis Championships since tournament director Michael Stich remains on track after a minor scare.

Top seed Kohlschreiber progressed to the quarter-finals in Hamburg on Wednesday with a 4-6 6-1 6-2 victory over Argentina's Nicolas Kicker, but was made to work for his victory after being broken twice in the opening set.

The 32-year-old, who is attempting to match Stich's feat in 1993, will face another Argentinian, Renzo Olivo, in the last eight.

Olivo eased through his showdown with compatriot Maximo Gonzalez 6-3 6-4 to reach his first ATP World Tour quarter-final.

Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas is hoping his victory over Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro proves to be a good omen once again.

Cuevas had twice beaten the 22-year-old already this season, in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and gone on to win the tournament.

He now faces Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, who beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 4-6 7-6 7-5 in a match lasting two hours and 49 minutes.

At the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad, Argentina's Facundo Bagnis set up a quarter-final clash with Fernando Verdasco by dispatching fourth seed Marcel Granollers.

The 26-year-old took an hour and 29 minutes to see off Granollers 7-5 6-3 to book the second last-eight appearance at tour level.

Spaniard Verdasco awaits Bagnis after the 32-year-old fifth seed beat Albert Montanes 6-3 6-2 in just 71 minutes.

Third seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas also progressed after a tight encounter with fellow Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, eventually going through 7-6 6-3.

He will face Andrea Arnaboldi in the quarter-finals following the Italian's 6-3 6-2 victory over eighth seed Evgeny Donskoy.
