Philipp Kohlschreiber won his first ATP Tour title of the year by beating Dominic Thiem 7-6 (9/7) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) in the BMW Open in Munich.

The match was close fought between the pair but Kohlschreiber went one better than he did last year in the event when he was beaten by Andy Murray in the 2015 final.

Third seed Thiem went into the match as favourite having reached three ATP Tour finals since January and they could not be separated as the first set went to a tie-break.

Kohlschreiber, who was seeded fourth in Munich, edged in front but Thiem came back strongly, breaking his opponent in the second set to take the match to a decider.

Both players picked up the pace on the clay court as they forced the final set to another tie-break.

Kohlschreiber once again came out on top as he secured his third Munich title having previously won the event in 2007 and 2012.
