Number one seed Bernard Tomic needed three sets to progress into the third round of the Ecuador Open in Quito.

He now meets Paolo Lorenzi in the quarter-finals after the Italian saw off Alejandro Falla 6-3 6-2 while third seed Thomaz Bellucci also made serene progress, beating Albert Montanes 6-2 6-4.

Pablo Carreno Busta won the battle of the Spaniards as he was a 6-7 7-6 6-2 victor over Inigo Cervantes and will face Bellucci in the last eight.

Number two seed Feliciano Lopez begins his tournament on Thursday with a second-round clash against Joao Souza while Fernando Verdasco faces Renzo Olivo.
