Novak Djokovic was given a tough workout on his return to action following a shock Wimbledon exit but he managed to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

World number one Djokovic, in his first match since crashing out of the third round at Wimbledon to American Sam Querrey, stayed on course for a fourth Rogers Cup title with a 7-5 7-6 (7/3) win against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller.

Top-seed Djokovic did not have it all his own way against world number 37 Muller and trailed 3-1 in the second-set tie-break before winning the final six points to seal victory in one hour and 43 minutes.

The Serbian will play veteran Radek Stepanek in the last 16 after the Czech beat Canadian wild card Peter Polansky 7-6 (7/5) 6-4.

Australian 12th seed Bernard Tomic overcame some stubborn resistance to see off home favourite and world number 192 Steven Diez 6-3 7-6 (7/4) in just over one and a half hours, while American Rajeev Ram upset French 13th seed Lucas Pouille 6-4 7-6 (7/5).

World number 144 Ryan Harrison maintained his fine run and ousted big-serving fellow American John Isner 7-6 (7/3) 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 to set up a third-round clash against Tomas Berdych.

Japan's world number six Kei Nishikori, seeded sixth, was the first winner of the day after beating American qualifier Dennis Novikov 6-4 7-5 and Djokovic's Wimbledon conqueror Querrey was forced to retire against seventh-seed David Goffin while trailing 6-4 2-1.
