Wild card Janko Tipsarevic set up a meeting with top seed Gilles Simon at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy after coming through his first-round clash against qualifier Thomas Fabbiano in Bucharest on Tuesday.
Serbian Tipsarevic ran out a 6-4 6-3 winner against Italy's Fabbiano to join Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Marcos Baghdatis - who will now face each other - in progressing to the next stage.
Fifth seed and 2013 finalist Garcia-Lopez's spot was secured as the Spaniard saw off Italian qualifier Lorenzo Giustino 6-2 6-0, while Cypriot Baghdatis made it through via a 6-4 6-2 win over Steve Darcis of Belgium.
Among the others to advance to the second round on Tuesday were Czech seventh seed Jiri Vesely, along with Italian eighth seed Simone Bolelli.
And Dusan Lajovic of Serbia also made it through for an encounter with fourth seed Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic.
