Monte Carlo mission ends in defeat for Jamie Murray

Jamie Murray and partner Bruno Soares missed out on their first Masters title as they were beaten by French pair Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in Monte Carlo.

Murray and Soares took the first set but were pegged back after a disastrous second and lost the resulting champions tie-break to fall 4-6 6-0 10-6 to their in-form opponents.

Murray had already done enough to ensure he will remain on top of the world doubles rankings on Monday after he and Brazilian Soares beat Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the semi-finals.

And the Scot had another career milestone on his mind after he and Soares grabbed the crucial first set break in the ninth game of the match before serving out to take the lead.

But the French pair hit back in style and held their nerve in a tight decider to add the Monte Carlo crown to other Masters title triumphs in both Miami and Indian Wells this season.
