Davis Cup hero Kyle Edmund came crashing down to earth with defeat in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Monday.

The 21-year-old, who starred for Great Britain in Serbia last weekend, slumped 3-6 6-3 6-2 to Canadian wildcard Steven Diez.

Edmund, the British number two, was moved into the main draw of the Masters event following a host of withdrawals including Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Everything seemed to be going to plan for the world number 84 as he broke in the fourth game and took the first set in 31 minutes - but Toronto-born Diez hit back strongly.

Two other Canadians also made progress, Denis Shapovalov and Peter Polansky.

Israel-born Shapovalov, this year's Wimbledon junior champion, overcame Australia's Nick Kyrgios 7-6 3-6 6-3 in front of an enthusiastic Centre Court crowd.

Wildcard Polansky came from a set down at the Aviva Centre to end the challenge of America's Tim Smyczek - 4-6 6-3 6-0.

However, another home hope - Frank Dancevic - came undone in the day's final game as America's Sam Querrey defeated him in straight sets, 7-6 6-4. Querrey will face seventh seed David Goffin in the second round.

Borna Coric hit back from a set down to oust fellow Croatian Ivan Dodig and and Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov did likewise against Japan's Yuichi Sugita - Coric will face the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych next while Dimitrov will meet 17-year-old Shapovalov.

American trio John Isner, Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison progressed comfortably in straight sets, as did Australia's Bernard Tomic, South Africa's Kevin Anderson, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller and Russia's Mikhail Youzhny - the latter's reward is a clash against second seed Stan Wawrinka.
