British number three Kyle Edmund progressed to round two of the Millennium Estoril Open with a straight sets 6-3 7-5 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain.

The 21-year-old from Yorkshire, ranked 89 in the world, claimed the opening five games of the first set to take control of the match but then had to respond after finding himself 3-0 behind in the second against the 30-year-old Spaniard.

South-African born Edmund converted five break-point chances on the way to victory, which secured a clash against world number 21 Benoit Paire of France, the tournament's third seed who had been given a first-round bye.
