Jo-Wilfried Tsonga marked his return from a knee injury by easing into the second round of the Shanghai Masters on Monday.

The Frenchman, who has not played since the injury forced him out of his US Open quarter-final against Novak Djokovic, dispatched Germany's Florian Mayer 6-3 6-2.

Tsonga, the runner-up in Shanghai last year, saved all five break points he faced as he wrapped up victory in just 71 minutes.

There was more French success on Monday as world number 47 Benoit Paire edged past Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3 5-7 6-1.

American Steve Johnson booked a second round match against Andy Murray with a 6-4 6-3 success over Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

It will be Johnson's second meeting with Murray this year after he narrowly lost their quarter-final at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

British number two Kyle Edmund marked his first appearance in the world's top 50 with an impressive 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over Argentina's Federico Delbonis.

Other qualifiers to advance on Monday were Vasek Pospisil, Taylor Fritz and Mischa Zverev, who beat Ivo Karlovic, Stephane Robert and Ze Zhang respectively.

Spaniard Nicolas Almagro beat fellow veteran Mikhail Youzhny 3-6 6-2 6-2 and there were also first round wins for Viktor Troicki and Alexander Zverev.
