Seeds John Millman and Damir Dzumhur were both made to work hard before advancing to the second round of the Memphis Open.
Number seven seed Millman beat Austin Krajicek 6-3 6-7 (3/7) 7-5, while the eighth-seeded Dzumhur overcame Tim Smyczek 6-3 4-6 6-3.
American teenager Taylor Fritz won for just the second time on the ATP Tour with a 6-3 6-4 win over Michael Mmoh.
Marcel Granollers, Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen and Ricardas Berankis also advanced and in the final match of the day Benjamin Becker saw off Tommy Paul 6-4 3-6 6-3.
