Fifth seed Andrey Golubev was the biggest casualty of the early third round play in the Pilot Pen Tennis in Connecticut as he was edged out 6-3 3-6 7-6 (9-7) by Russian qualifier Teymouras Gabashvili.
Golubev was not the only seed to fall with Germany's eighth seed Florian Meyer also coming off worst in his tie with South African 12th seed Thiemo De Bakker, who won 6-7 (7/2) 6-1 7-5.
In other early men's action, Denis Istomin and Evgeny Korolev were both winners while in a held-over second round tie Alex Dolgopolov was a comfortable 6-4 6-2 winner over American wild card James Blake.
All the big names survived in the women's second round led by fourth seed Elena Dementieva who was pushed to three sets by Kateryna Bondarenko before going through 7-6 (7/4) 6-7 (7/5) 6-4.
Sixth seed and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli beat qualifier Anastasia Rodionova 6-3 6-1 and there were also wins for Flavia Pennetta, Nadia Petrova and wild card Dinara Safina.
