Gilles Muller fights back to knock out top seed David Ferrer

Big-serving Gilles Muller fired 17 aces as he came from behind to beat top seed David Ferrer 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/5) to seal a place in the semi-finals of the Ricoh Open on Friday.

After losing the opening set, Muller broke Ferrer's serve for the only time in the match in the final game of the second set. He then saved three break points in the final set before taking his third match point opportunity to knock out the 2008 and 2012 's-Hertogenbosch champion.

The powerful left-hander will face another big hitter in Ivo Karlovic in the last four after the Croatian overcame Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-4.

Second seed Bernard Tomic is also out after losing 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-2 to Nicolas Mahut and he will play Sam Querrey in the other semi-final after he cruised past Stefan Kozlov 6-3 6-0.

In the woman's draw, top seed Belinda Bencic beat qualifier Viktorija Golubic 7-6 (8/6) 7-6 (7/2) and she will play Kristina Mladenovic in the semi-finals after her 7-5 6-3 win against Elise Mertens.

The other last-four tie sees Coco Vandeweghe against Madison Brengle. Vandeweghe beat Evgeniya Rodina 6-2 6-2, while Brengle was also a straight sets winners against Kateryna Kozlova, 7-5 6-4.
