American Coco Vandeweghe provided the shock of the day at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham by knocking out number one seed Agnieszka Radwanska as British wildcards Naomi Broady and Tara Moore both bowed out.

World number 32 Vandeweghe secured the biggest win of her career against Radwanska, winning 7-5 4-6 6-3 in a rain-affected first round thriller against the world number three, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2012 when she was beaten in three sets by Serena Williams.

Vandeweghe, who won her first title in Holland last week, had never taken a set off Radwanska in four previous meetings, but held her nerve in each close-fought set.

Vandeweghe's win sets up a second round clash with fellow American Christina McHale, who beat Czech Republic qualifier Katerina Siniakova 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Broady and Moore both slipped to hard-fought defeats in rain-affected matches carried over from Tuesday.

Moore's resistance was halted by Tamira Paszek, who broke in the penultimate game to to win 4-6 6-4 6-4, while Broady succumbed to Daria Gavrilova 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Play was suspended throughout the day again and finally abandoned shortly after 7pm before Britain's Johanna Konta was due to play Japan's Misaki Doi and while Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki led 3-2 in the first set against Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer.

Spanish sixth seed Carla Suarez Navarro had earlier hit back to beat Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 7-5 4-6 7-5 after being two points away from defeat and Swiss fourth seed Belinda Bencic was forced to retire against Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu due to a thigh injury as she trailed 6-4 4-3.

In the Mallorca Open, another grass-court warm-up before Wimbledon, German Sabine Lisicki's woes continued as she was beaten 1-6 6-3 6-4 by Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino.

Lisicki, 2013 Wimbledon finalist but whose loss of form this year has seen her slide out of the top 50, made a flying start to her second round match, but was pegged back in the second set and eventually outfought by the world number 79.

Serbian second seed Jelena Jankovic did not win a game in the first set but recovered to beat Belgium's Elise Mertens 0-6 6-4 6-3 to progress to the third round.

Canada's eighth seed Eugenie Bouchard slipped to a 6-3 6-3 second round defeat to Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova and Romania's Sorana Cirstea beat Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 6-4.
