Andy Murray and David Ferrer were among the players advancing to the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Thursday.

Top seed Murray, who is gunning for a third title this month and could move up a place to world number one before the end of the year, came from behind against France's Gilles Simon, the Briton registering a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory to set up a meeting with American John Isner.

Spain's defending champion Ferrer, the fifth seed, defeated Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-2 7-6 (7-4) and will now face Viktor Troicki after the Serbian sent third-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem crashing out, 6-2 7-5.

The other seed in action, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (six), safely made it through as the Frenchman beat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.

His reward is a clash with Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a 3-6 6-4 6-0 victor on Thursday over another home favourite, wildcard Jurgen Melzer.

Meanwhile, at the Swiss Indoors Basle, top-seeded Stan Wawrinka had to battle hard to secure a quarter-final spot in his home tournament, edging past American qualifier Donald Young 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4.

Next up for Wawrinka is another qualifier in Mischa Zverev, who saw off Guido Pella 6-4 6-2.

Fourth seed Marin Cilic also progressed via a triumph over Pablo Carreno Busta, but fifth seed David Goffin and eighth seed Jack Sock both exited in round two, beaten by Juan Martin Del Potro and Marcel Granollers respectively.

Thursday's other second-round match saw Gilles Muller get past Florian Mayer.
