British number two Aljaz Bedene suffered a first-round defeat against Russian wildcard Karen Khachanov at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open, losing 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-4.

Bedene, the 26-year-old world number 59, saw the opening set get away from him but recovered to claim the tie-break and level.

However, Slovenian-born Bedene could not maintain his momentum as 19-year-old Khachanov secured two match points in the 10th game of the decider, which the 6ft 6ins Muscovite delivered at the first time of asking as the Briton's return hit the net.

Khachanov, ranked 128, had also knocked Bedene out of the Barcelona Open last week.
