American Ryan Sweeting will face French top seed Gael Monfils after a first-round triumph on Tuesday at the $1.4 million ATP Washington Classic.
Sweeting ousted countryman Alex Bogomolov 6-2, 6-4 to secure a second-round meeting with seventh-ranked Monfils, among 16 players to receive an opening-round bye.
US wildcard Ryan Harrison defeated Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to book a second-round date with Serbian third seed Viktor Troicki, second-highest among the ranked players in the event after eighth-ranked Mardy Fish withdrew.
Joining the injury list with Fish, who had a bruised right heel, was Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, who pulled out Tuesday with knee tendinitis. He was replaced by Bosnian Amer Delic for a first-round match with Germany's Tommy Haas.
In other first-round matches, Germany's Michael Berrer beat Italy's Paolo Lorenzi 7-5, 6-1 and Italy's Flavio Cipolla downed Turkey's Marsel Ilhan 7-5, 6-0.
