Venus Williams to miss Italy match

Venus Williams has pulled out of the United States' Fed Cup play-off against Italy this weekend.

The 34-year-old, ranked number 16 in the world, withdrew due to a personal matter and was replaced by Lauren Davis, a quarter-finalist at last week's Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Venus' sister Serena Williams will be part of the team for the second tie in succession, having returned against Argentina in February for her first appearance since April 2013.

Alison Riske and Christina McHale complete the quartet for the tie in Brindisi, where a place in the World Group next year is on the line.

Team captain Mary Joe Fernandez told the official website of the United States Tennis Association: "I am thrilled to have Serena playing with us again. This team also has depth."

Italy have won their previous four meetings with the States in recent years and Fernandez admitted: "Italy have been a challenge since they have been such a strong team over the years but we look forward to trying to get a win to get back into the World Group next year."
