Second seed Teliana Pereira beaten by Catalina Pella in Claro Open Colsanitas

Second seed Teliana Pereira suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Argentinian qualifier Catalina Pella in the first round of the Claro Open Colsanitas.

The Brazilian world number 55 won the first set in Bogota but was eventually beaten 3-6 6-3 7-6(7/3) in two hours and 20 minutes.

Top seed Elina Svitolina dropped the first set 7-5 against Russian Alexandra Panova but the world number 16 had hit back to lead the second 5-1 before rain ended the day's play.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, three other seeds eased through to the second round.

Fifth seed Irina Falconi downed home hope Emiliana Arango 6-0 6-1, Germany's Tatjana Maria, seeded sixth, saw off Marina Melnikova 6-1 6-3 while eighth seed Anna Tatishvili beat Ipek Soylu 6-4 6-3.

There were mixed fortunes for Spain with Silvia Soler-Espinosa beating qualifier Tereza Martincova 6-2 7-5 but Laura Pous-Tio was beaten 6-4 6-3 by Elitsa Kostova 6-4 6-3.

In the day's other games, Sweden's Rebecca Peterson beat Chilean qualifier Daniela Seguel 6-3 4-6 6-3 while France's Sherazad Reix beat Sanaz Marand 6-3 7-6 (7/2).
