Teliana Pereira became the first Brazilian to win a WTA Tour title in 27 years after beating fifth seed Yaroslava Shvedova in the final of the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota.

Not since Neige Dias won the Spanish Open in April 1988 had someone from Brazil reached a final at a WTA Tour event, but Pereira went into Sunday's showpiece event after beating former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and number one seed Elina Svitolina en route.

And after edging a tight first set against Kazakhstan's Shvedova, she never looked back and sealed a 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 victory in the Colombian capital.

"This has been the best week of my life," said Pereira on the WTA Tour website. "When I was training, I always dreamt of winning a WTA championship, and now I've done it.

"I felt very solid all week and I'm so happy to win my first WTA title here in Bogota."
