Smiles all round as Murray fumbles Union Flag at photo call

Andy Murray caused mild bemusement after fumbling with the Union Flag at a Team GB photo call.

Murray was handed the prestigious honour of being Britain's flag bearer for Friday's Olympics opening ceremony in Rio but there was confusion all round when he was unclear on which side to hold the flag at Wednesday night's event.

With the Princess Royal and Lord Sebastian Coe, to his left, equally flummoxed, Murray attempted to make up for his faux pas but then entirely concealed the former's face.

Murray then appeared thoroughly confused when he was asked to hold the flag between him and Princess Anne as laughter erupted.

The Scot was selected ahead of cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins, boxer Nicola Adams and canoeist David Florence to become the first tennis player to land the honour.

He spoke of his pride at being put forward for the role, saying: "I am very proud to be selected. To represent your country at the Games is an unbelievable experience, but to lead out Team GB will be an incredible honour, the biggest in sport.

"This is my third Olympic Games and it is a very special competition for me.

"I obviously have great memories of London and I am 100 per cent focused on winning here in Rio.

"The privilege of being the flag bearer is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life and will certainly be one of the highlights of my career.

"I hope to do the team proud on Friday and wish all of the British athletes the best of luck for the Games ahead."
