Teenager Jared Donaldson was forced to take a rain check in his bid to oust second seed Stan Wawrinka from the Western & Southern Open.

Inclement weather in Cincinnati led to Tuesday's session being declared incomplete by organisers, just 46 minutes into a match between 19-year-old Donaldson and Switzerland's world number four Wawrinka that the American was leading 6-2 0-3 after sending down three aces.

Juan Monaco was a game away from booking a second-round meeting with Wimbledon and Olympic champion Andy Murray. His encounter with big-serving Ivo Karlovic was suspended with the Argentinian 6-4 5-3 up, while Jiri Vesely and Marcel Granollers ducked for cover with the scores at 3-3 in the first set.

Earlier in the day ninth seed Gael Monfils downed Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-4 with 11th-seeded David Goffin dismissing qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5 6-3 and Richard Gasquet going the distance to beat his fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (7/2) 3-6 6-1.

Meeting Goffin in the next round is Bernard Tomic, a 6-4 6-3 victor over Joao Sousa, and Marcos Baghdatis progressed to a second-round clash against Monfils courtesy of a 7-5 7-5 win over Vasek Pospisil.

Elsewhere, there were victories for 2013 finalist John Isner, his countryman Steve Johnson, Australia's John Millman, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, and the Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.
