Juan Martin del Potro beats Dustin Brown in Munich on clay-court comeback

Juan Martin del Potro secured his first clay-court win in three years as he advanced to the second round of the BMW Open in Munich on Wednesday.

The former US Open champion, whose career has been beset by injuries, was a 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 winner over Germany's Dustin Brown.

Fifth seed Fabio Fognini saw off home favourite and world number 285 Maximilian Marterer, breaking his opponent six times on his way to wrapping up a 6-3 6-1 victory.

Eighth seed Alexander Zverev was another seed to advance, the German having to come from behind to see off Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Other winners included Dutch qualifier Igor Sjisling, Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic, and German Jan-Lennard Struff, who beat seventh seed Vasek Pospisil in three sets.

In two second-round matches on Wednesday, third seed Dominic Thiem scored a 7-5 6-4 win over Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, while Ivan Dodig beat sixth seed Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.
