Isner battles into Nice third round

Second seed John Isner came through a tough battle with fellow American Steve Johnson in their second-round meeting at the Open de Nice on Tuesday.

The big-serving Isner was taken to three sets by his compatriot before clinching a 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-3 success in four minutes shy of two hours.

Eighth-seeded Argentinian Juan Monaco enjoyed a rather more comfortable progression as he cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win over American Sam Querrey.

In the first round, Bernand Tomic, the fifth seed from Australia, was forced to retire during his match with French qualifier Gianni Mina, calling it quits after losing the first set 6-2.

American seventh seed Jack Sock was another seed to fall, surrendering a one-set advantage to lose 5-7 7-5 6-1 to Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.

Australia's sixth seed Nick Kyrgios saw off Mikhail Kukushkin from Kazakhstan 7-6 (7/5) 6-2.

Other first-round winners included Australia's James Duckworth, France's Lucas Pouille and Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.
