British number two Aljaz Bedene was unable to spring a surprise in the Wimbledon first round as he lost in straight sets to Richard Gasquet.

The Slovenian-born Bedene, who moved to Hertfordshire in 2008, is yet to play his best tennis on grass and he struggled to trouble the Frenchman, who won 6-3 6-4 6-3.

Gasquet, the seventh seed and a potential quarter-final opponent for Andy Murray, will play either Spain's Marcel Granollers or Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic in the second round.
